Is CenturyLaminate safe in the event of a fire?
There are 2 standards when it comes to Protection from Fire – Fire Retardant and Fire Resistant.
Firstly, we have to understand the difference between Fire Retardant and Fire resistant.
Fire Resistant means rendering something proof from fire or incombustible. The material will not be able to induce fire through it.
Fire Retardant means the material is more resistant (not completely resistant) to fire than other materials. So in the event of a fire, a fire retardant material can catch fire but the spread of the flame will be constrained to a limited surface area.
Under Fire Retardant there are 2 classes; Class 1 and Class 2.
Class 1 Fire Retardant rating means that the building material is highly resistant to fire and does not spread flames quickly. In the flame-spread rating test, the spread radius is not more than 75mm which constitutes a Class 1 rating.
Class 2 Fire Retardant rating means that the building material is also resistant to fire and does not spread the flames as quickly as a normal combustible material will spread across. In the flame-spread rating test, the spread radius is not more than 170mm which constitutes a Class 2 rating.
